You need a manual to operate a new appliance. You need to read the rules before you play a new board game. Learning to play the bass guitar is no different. You’ll have a manual like no other – the tablature.

Learning To Play The Acoustic Guitar Using Tablature
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Evert_Du_Toit]Evert Du Toit
The acoustic guitar evolved from classic guitars. The strings of an acoustic guitar are typically made from steel rings, as opposed to the nylon or catgut strings used for classical guitars. That is why an acoustic guitar is sometime called a steel-stringed guitar. Acoustic guitars have a clearer and louder sound due to a much stronger construction than other guitars.
A acoustic guitar is usually played using a guitar pick, also called a plectrum (plural plectra), made from plastic, metal, ivory or other materials. The guitarist strums or strikes the guitar strings with the pick, which he will often hold between the index finger and thumb. Other guitarists do not use a pick, but play with their fingernails or bare fingers strumming or plucking individual notes on the guitar.
The type of construction and the materials used influence the price and sound quality of an acoustic guitar. A guitar with solid sides, back and top will be more expensive than one with laminated sides and back. The solid type guitars are generally made using maple, mahogany or Indian rosewood, whereas cheaper guitars are build with laminated woods. The neck and fingerboard are made with denser woods like cedar and ebony. The tone of the guitar is defined by the combination of woods used in the manufacture. To make the guitars a little less expensive, some manufacturers use alternative materials such as graphite and plastic.
A guitar tablature is a diagram of the strings with finger positions indicated by numerals corresponding to the appropriate frets. Tablature is sometime referred to in the short form "tab". Learning to play the acoustic guitar can be greatly eased by using tablature it corresponds more to how you actually play the guitar than standard musical notation.
Vertical lines on the tab represent the strings, horizontal lines represent the frets and the dots show the finger positions. For an acoustic guitar it is a six line staff with the lines numbered. Take note that the tablature is written "upside down" with the higher notes at the top and lower ones at the bottom to correspond to standard music notation. The numbers indicate which fret should be used.
Guitar tabs are standardized, but various publishers of sheet music may use different styles writing guitar music. Guitar magazines, songbooks and journals will provide a legend to specify the style they are using.
The six line guitar tab has several advantages over standard musical notifaction that use a five line staff for learning to play acoustic guitar. It is much easier to interpret guitar tab and new players can pick it up quickly. So go ahead, get some of your favourite songs in tab format and play away!

Guitar Tablature Or Sheet Music?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Edvinsson]Peter Edvinsson
Is it necessary to learn ordinary music notation for guitar or is it sufficient to know how to read tabs? Is it worth the price to learn to read ordinary guitar sheets?
Many guitar books available with tablature notation will also have a staff above with the guitar sheet music notation. It is also very common today that classical guitar books also have a guitar tab staff below.
This was not very common a few decades ago. Tablature has by some guitarists been considered cheating. Is it cheating or is it a help to have tabs at your disposal?
Personally I have as a guitar teacher experienced many instances when tablature has been a great help to my pupils. however, I would be very happy if young musicians would put more energy into the endeavor to learn to read sheet music notation.
It is a great advantage to have a working knowledge on how to read and understand music scores and the various symbols pertaining to it.
Let's take a look at the advantages of being able to read guitar music notation:
1. You will be able to play a piece of music the way the composer has intended without having heard it before. This is possible because music notation consists of descriptions concerning the pitch and also the length of the notes and other symbols telling you how to play the notes and performing the music.
2. You will have an enormous library of sheet music from various time periods at your disposal. It is possible to play music written for other instruments as well as music notation doesn't describe how to play the notes on a particular instrument but more which notes to play. This makes it possible for a guitarist to play violin exercises and vocal scores and so on.
3. You will as a guitarist be able to write and arrange music for other instruments in your band making it possible to shorten the rehearsal time and facilitating the use of more complicated musical arrangements.
4. Being able to read and use sheet music will help you as a composer to notate all your ideas in a way that you will remember and that you easily can share with your friends and others.
Let's look at the advantages of using guitar tablature:
1. Being a poor sheet music reader can hinder your from playing on the level of your techniqal skills. It's a pity that many guitar pupils play just a few boring sheet music melodies when they could really be playing melodies using the entire fretboard just by the use of tablature.
2. It is very easy to describe chords, licks and complicated riffs with the help of tablature especially if you have audio examples of the music.
3. Tablature notation is still as easy to read even when you use alternative tunings as the tab notation still tells you only how to put your fingers. Using sheet music notation with alternative tunings on the guitar is a bit difficult to say the least.
4. Internet is flooded with more or less accurate tablature renditions of popular riffs, songs and more.
Okey, but what is the best alternative, guitar tablature or guitar sheet music?
My opinion is that you can use tablature as much as you want but I recommend you to really learn to read sheet music notation because of the many advantages you will reap from it.
If you start by learning the names of the notes on the frets of the guitar you have already gained an important skill that will help you as you start to learn the notes on a music score staff.

Guitar Lesson: Learn To Play Popular Melody On Your Guitar
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Edvinsson]Peter Edvinsson
There are many ways to notate music on the guitar. You can use sheet music easy to understand when you have learned to read sheet music. To learn to read sheet music on the guitar is however not so easy for many students.
What different ways are there to notate guitar melodies?
1. You can use guitar sheet music. The advantage is that it is universal, meaning that other instrumentalists will understand the notation.
2. You can use guitar tablature. A tablature staff consists of six lines representing the six strings on a guitar. Number on the lines indicate what fret to press down. Guitar tablature is very common on the net and is a widely used.
3. Use another system.
4. Describe with words how to play the melody on the guitar.
In this article I will use an easy system that doesn't need a staff and I will also describe how to play the melody on the guitar with words. We will learn to play the melody Happy Birthday To You.
How to read the guitar notation
The first number tells you what fret to press down. The second number what string to play on. An example:
1/2
This means, press down the first fret on the second string.
Let's play Happy Birthday To You. We can divide the song into four parts:
1. Start by playing the open third string twice. When you play a string without pressing down a fret is called to play an open string. Then you press down the second fret on the third string and the open third string. Play the first fret of the second string and the open second string. It will look like this:
0/3 0/3 2/3 0/3 1/2 0/2
2. Play the open third string twice. Play the second fret on the third string and the open third string. Play the third fret of the second string and the first fret on the second string. It will look like this:
0/3 0/3 2/3 0/3 3/2 1/2
3. Play the open third string twice. The third fret on the first string and the open first string. The first fret string two and open second string. Second fret on the third string. It will look like this:
0/3 0/3 3/1 0/1 1/2 0/2 2/3
4. We finish the song by playing the first fret first string twice. Open first string and first fret second string. Third fret second string and first fret second string.
1/1 1/1 0/1 1/2 3/2 1/2
Learning to play the song Happy Birthday To You on guitar is a good investment. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, "Happy Birthday to You" is among the top three most popular songs in the English language.

Learn To Play Guitar Tab - Amazing Grace
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Edvinsson]Peter Edvinsson
Even if you never have played melodies on your guitar before the time has come now! You will learn to play guitar tab and a very popular melody even if you do not know sheet music notation. Pick up your guitar and let's start!
We will first take a look at the lyrics of the first verse:
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound!
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see
First you have to learn to play guitar tab notation. Guitar tab or tablature notation is a way of showing how to play notes on your guitar with the help of numbers telling you on which fret to play and on which string:
1. ----------------------
2. ----------------------
3. ----------------------
The three lines represent the three first strings on your guitar. The line at the top named 1. represents the first string or E-string on the guitar.
Now you will learn to play your first guitar tab as we try the first line of lyrics together with the guitar tablature notation of the melody:
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound!
1. ------------0-------0-------------------------
2. -------1-------1--------3-----1--------------
3. --0----------------------------------2----0--
The numbers you see on the guitar tablature staff tell you which fret to play. The number 0 indicates that you shall play a string without pressing down a fret.P>
This is called to play on an open string.
As you can see from this guitar tab notation the first note is on the open third string on your guitar. The next note is on the first fret on the second string.
Time to learn to play the next line of lyrics with the melody on your guitar:
That sav'd a wretch like me!
1. --------------0-------0---------0----3----
2. ---------1-------1---------3---------------
3. ---0----------------------------------------
You can play the notes with your right hand thumb. It is probably the easiest way to pluck the strings for now.
Let us proceed with the third line of lyrics and guitar tab:
I once was lost, but now am found
11. ---0----3----0---------0-------------------------
2. --------------------1--------3----1----------------
3. -----------------------------------------2----0----
Maybe you are pressing down the guitar frets with your right hand index finger.
If you want to prepare for more difficult guitar melodies you can try to play the notes on the first fret with your index finger, the notes on the second fret with your middle finger and the notes on the third fret with your ring finger.
Now we will learn to play the guitar tab for the last line of lyrics and complete this guitar lesson:
Was blind, but now I see
1. ---------------0--------0---------------
2. ----------1--------1------- 3----1----
3. ----0-----------------------------------
We have now completed this guitar lesson and you have learned to play the melody to Amazing Grace!
You have also learned to understand the use of guitar tab notation. You can find many more popular songs written with tablature on the internet.

Flamenco Guitar: Learn To Play Malaguena With Guitar Tab
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Edvinsson]Peter Edvinsson
Flamenco guitar is an art that it is hard to master. But is it possible to play a flamenco guitar melody that is easy to learn for a beginner. Come and see!
Flamenco is a song, music and dance style which has its roots in Moorish and Jewish musical traditions.
Flamenco culture has become one of the icons of Spanish music and even Spanish culture in general.
The flamenco guitar comes from the lute and is made of Spanish cypress and spruce and is smaller than a classical guitar with a sharper sound.
Malaguena is a flamenco style with its roots in the local fandango of Malaga.
You will not need to read sheet music to play this flamenco guitar piece. We will instead use guitar tablature. You will only use four strings on the guitar.
The string with the highest pitch is called the first string or E-string. Look at the following guitar tab with four strings indicated:
1. -------------------------
2. ---------0-----------0---
3. -----1-----------1-------
4. -2-----------2-----------
This is a tablature staff and the number 2 on the fourth string indicate that you play the fourth string while pressing down the second fret.
The next note is played on the first fret on the third string. The zero indicate that you play the note without pressing down any fret.
Play the melody with your thumb and with your first finger resting on the first string for later use.
Here is the next guitar tablature part:
1. -------------------------
2. -----1---0---------------
3. -2-----------2---0-------
4. ---------------------3---
After the last note on the third fret on the fourth string you just start over again with the first guitar tab staff.
Now it is time to introduce your first finger on your right hand into the melody. After every note you play with your thumb you just have to pluck the first string with your first finger. In guitar tab it looks like this:
1. -----0-------0------
2. -----------------0--
3. ---------1----------
4. -2------------------
And so on for the rest of the melody!
I hope you will find this very simplified flamenco guitar tab melody enjoyable. I guess many people will recognize the melody when they hear you play it.
Flamenco guitar playing is of course an art that is hard to master but this little flamenco piece doesn't sound so bad. Does it!

The Basics Of Playing Guitar Tabs
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Keith_Wiseman]Keith Wiseman
The guitar is maybe the most famous and recognizable of all the stringed instruments. It consist of six strings which can be either made of steel or nylon. Its one of the most versatile instruments in the world. Any kind of music can be played on it.
Learning to play the guitar can consist of learning a few chords and strumming a few songs to studying music at a professional level. This involves learning to read music and studying theory. There is nothing wrong with this and if you plan on becoming a professional musician it is something you should consider.
Somewhere in between learning a few chords and music theory is a system of notation known as tablature or tab for short. This is a much easier and faster way to learn to play really well (with lots of practice of course). Tab has become so popular that almost every piece of guitar music can be found written in tablature as well as standard notation.
Here are the basics of tab.
e------------------------
B------------------------
G------------------------
D------------------------
A------------------------
E------------------------
The lines represent the guitar strings. The small "e" is the bottom or skinny string of the guitar. The big "E" is the top or fat string.
Here is how music is written in tablature.
e---------5--8--5-----------0--------------
B------5-----------5--------2--------------
G---7------------------7----2--------------
D----------------------------2--------------
A----------------------------0--------------
E--------------------------------------------
Here we play the G string in the 7th fret, then the B string in the 5th fret and so on in sequence. Any time a sequence of notes fall directly underneath each other they are played all together. A "0" on a string means that that string is played open, that is with no fretting.
This is the basics of tablature. So pick up that guitar, find some tabs and start shredding.
SEX APPEAL... is being able to play the guitar. Women find men who can play an instrument alluring. Tantalize women at parties with your guitar playing skills. Play your favourite songs! Accelerate your learning and get results fast! http://www.tubemyguitar.com/

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dean_Erickson]Dean Erickson
The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments and the online guitar community probably the most popular of its kind. There are thousands of guitarists connected via online communities sharing guitar tabs, tips and stories and there are many of websites dedicated to sharing guitar music, tablature and even guitar lessons. Some you have to pay for, but there's a lot out there for free.
Beginning guitarists and professionals alike can take advantage of what is available for free on the Internet. It's true, you can really download guitar tablature for free on the Internet. There are literally thousands of pieces available for download, everything from classical and jazz music to rock and pop. Try typing "guitar tablature", "guitar tabs" or "guitar sheet music" into your favorite search engine. This will bring up a plethora of websites which offer music for download. Some sites will charge a membership fee, but offer samples for free so that you can try them out. At first it is difficult to sift through all the sites and find one that is suitable for your needs, but stick with it, and you'll find exactly what you want.
Some sites specialize in specific music genres, such as classical or rock. Some sites have audio samples of the sheet music so that you can actually listen to unknown pieces before you download. In the end you may choose to pay a membership fee to take advantage of added services that these sites provide.
But before you do that take advantage of everything that's free. The Internet is such a great place for picking up guitar tricks and tips or even learning the instrument on your own.
Start by doing a Google search for "Free guitar lessons" (use quotation marks) and the top five search results will yield websites with archives full of free guitar lessons. These lessons are designed with the absolute beginner in mind. The advantage of learning the guitar on the Internet is that you can take your lesson whenever you have time or are in the mood and you never have to leave the comfort of your own home. You'll start off with all the basics: learn about the parts of the guitar, learn how it works, learn scales, strumming patterns, chromatic scales, as well as many songs to play. Despite the relative ease of the Internet, lessons should be taken in the order that they are written.
And remember, your Internet lessons may be free, but they aren't miracle workers, you still have to commit to a regular program of study and practice.

Acoustic Guitar Tabs
Learning to play acoustic guitar is a great adventure which is sometimes spoilt a bit by the chore of having to learn to read music. But for most acoustic guitar players, learning all the symbols and theory connected with musical notation is not really necessary.
Tablature for acoustic guitar has certain points giving it an edge over standard musical notation. Despite the fact that tempo and time signatures are not included, sometimes it's easier for the guitarist to pick up music from tablature. The ease with which you can learn tablature means that your progress on the guitar is not slowed by such things as the use of alternate tunings.
Acoustic guitar tab is easily written on a computer by way of ASCII code, which makes it easier to email or post on the web.
Tablature shows diagrammatically where finger positions are indicated using numbers representing the guitar's frets along horizontal lines representing the strings. The note G played on the first (thinnest) string is shown by the number 3 written on the top line of the tablature.
Hammer-ons, string bends, pull-offs and other techniques are shown by symbols. Each tablature writer has his own idea of the best way to show how to play the music, and he usually includes a legend showing his symbols on each tab.
With the aid of guitar tabs, you can learn new music quickly without going to the additional trouble of learning conventional music notation.
A lot of guitar teachers proclaim the virtues of learning to read sheet music. Some even think you are not a "real" musician unless you can read "real" music. But if you look at playing music as a way of each individual expressing themselves in their own unique way, then how you write your music down is not one of the biggest issues in your life!

Guitar Tablature - Learn To Play Yankee Doodle
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Edvinsson]Peter Edvinsson
You can learn to play melodies on your guitar even if you do not know sheet music notation. You will instead use easy to learn guitar tab or guitar tablature. Let's learn Yankee Doodle!
"Yankee Doodle" is a well-known American song, often sung patriotically today (although originally satirical). It is the state anthem of Connecticut.
The first verse and refrain goes like this:
Yankee Doodle went to town
A-Riding on a pony
He stuck a feather in his hat
And called it macaroni
Yankee Doodle, keep it up
Yankee Doodle dandy
Mind the music and the step
And with the girls be handy
We will use guitar tablature so you will not need to read sheet music notation. You will only use the thinnest strings on the guitar. The string with the highest pitch is called the first string or E-string. Look at the following guitar tab:
1. 0--0--0--------------------
2. --------- 1--1--1-----------
3. ------------------2--2--2--
This is a guitar tablature staff and the four number 0 indicate that you play the first string four times without pressing down any finger on your right hand. This is called to play on an open string.
The four number 1 coming after is played on the second string pressing down your first finger on the first fret. Then you will play the third string four times pressing down the string on the second fret. This is what the previous guitar tablature notation is telling you.
Let's take a look at Yankee Doodle and see what the melody looks like with guitar tab notation. We will start playing the melody to the following lyrics:
Yankee Doodle went to town
This will look as follows with guitar tablature:
1. ----------0-----0-----
2. -1--1--3-----1-----3--
3. ----------------------
4. ----------------------
The names of the four notes you have played are C C D E C E D
If you want to use your left hand in a professional way you can play the guitar tab notes on the first fret with your first finger, notes on the second fret with your middle finger and the notes on the third fret with your ring finger.
Let's proceed with the next words:
A-Riding on a pony
1. --------------0--------
2. -----1--1--3-----1--0--
3. --0--------------------
4. -----------------------
The names of the seven notes are G C C D E C B
How do you play guitar tab with your right hand?
Well, there are many ways to pluck or play the strings with your right hand. The easiest way is to use your right hand thumb.

Acoustic Guitar Tabs
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Damian_Sofsian]Damian Sofsian
A guitar tablature, known as tab, is a diagram of strings where finger positions are indicated using numerals corresponding to the appropriate frets. Vertical lines represent the strings of an instrument and the horizontal lines represent the frets and dots indicate finger positions.
The series of horizontal lines forms what is called a staff or stave. Each line represents a string, and the standard acoustic guitar tab has a six-line staff. Numbers are written on the lines. Each represents a fret on the instrument. For example, a number 3 written on the top line means that the player should press down on the high E (top/thin) string (and not the low E, which is thicker) at the third fret. Number 0 stands for an open string.
To denote bends, hammer-ons and so forth, various lines, arrows and other symbols are used. A guitar tab is standardized, but different sheet music publishers adopt different styles in writing guitar music. Songbooks, guitar magazines and journals usually give a legend that specifies the style used.
The tab notation has several advantages over the standard musical notation, which uses a five-line staff. It is often easier and quicker for the player to interpret. Even those adept at reading the standard notation usually prefer the tab notation when it comes to learning to play guitar, because the acoustic guitar is a “harmonic” instrument, meaning that it plays multiple notes simultaneously. Moreover, acoustic guitar staff notation is written on a single staff compared with two for keyboard music. Therefore, it takes less time to read. The tab can also be easily represented using the ASCII code, which makes it easier to distribute electronically.
However, the tab is instrument specific, meaning that music written can only be played on guitar. Also, the tab only includes the pitch of the notes, and not rhythm. But rhythm can be indicated by notes or note stems written above the tab staff. This practice is sometimes adopted in guitar tab notation. What is Guitar Tab or Tablature
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Bill_McRea]Bill McRea
The guitar tablature is a notation that shows you were to place your fingers on a guitar fretboard in order to achieve certain chords. It does not deal with pitches as in standard music notation.
Guitar tablature is popular in music genres like rock and pop. They are rarely used in classical music. It is also a lot easier to use since it is a direct representation of the fretboard with the fingers.
If you are a budding guitarist you may meet guitar tablature while at a gig. It may also be standard for a band you'll like to join. So, how do you learn to read and write guitar tablature?
Like everything else in life, you can hang out with those who do use them and try to figure it out all by yourself. You can also get someone who'll explain it to you.
Now that we have the internet, there are several sites that have guitar tablature lessons. Just do a search in any of the popular search engines and you'll get help.
There is also another option: Guitar tablature software. They come with different features. Playing around with this kind of software will teach you a lot while you'll still be developing your guitar skills.
All you need to do is to follow the tune and begin to decode it. This assumes that you either have knowledge of standard music notation or use guitar tablature software that shows you what you're doing either by showing you keyboard notes or something else that will give you a reference point.
